Simple Pleasures, #3
I know I fell down on the job, but people, lemme tell ya. The weekend plus that holiday with kiddo at home just did not find me in front of the computer! No matter, I’ve got a stock pile of pleasing things to remind you of just how great life can be sometimes when you take a look at the itty bitty pieces. You know, just lil things that are so fantastic and you totally overlook them.
I now turn your attention to the greatness of soup on a cold day. Last weekend it was (and last week in general) it was c-c-c-cold and grey here in Austin, Texas! A rarity, to be sure. Personally, during those ten days or so, I went ahead and indulged in a few different kinds of soup. One day, when I didn’t feel like cooking, Colby and I went for Pho. Is there much better than a flavorful Vietnamese broth heaped with fresh fragrant herbs? Giant balls of noodles bobbing around? I mean, really? Hard to say, because I also made some comparably mouth-watering soups at home as well.
Wanna know what I made? Huh? Huh? I’m-a tell ya anyways. I made some split-pea soup complete with a little potato, plenty of carrots, and fancy-expensive-happy-pig-land sweet Italian sausage. ’Cause y’all know I don’t eat commercial meat unless it comes from some seriously hoity-toity ranch that bathed those animals in essential oils and gave them daily massages. You know, organic. Humanely raised. All that hooey.
And speaking of humanely raised, how much more so can you get than venison, felled by my very own great white hunter? With a couple pounds of that delicious deer he shot with his crossbow (again!) a few weekends ago, I made some truly fantastic chili. The recipe called for hominy! Hominy! In chili! I mean to tell you folks, that was something special. Additionally, it called for some classy peppers. Not the kind already prepared for your lazy butt. Dried ones, that I had to boil, plump, and then puree for the base. This ain’t your gramma’s “put a can of this into that bag, add cheese, and microwave for three minutes” recipe!
Soup. On a cold day. Tis good!
